My fifth graders tend to feel uncomfortable sitting on the floor during lessons because they do not feel it is enough room. It makes it difficult for them to focus and truly take in the "meaning" of the lesson. On the other hand they tend to get restless and fidgety when having to sit for long periods of time in their seats. I want my learners to feel comfortable enough to be able to focus simply on the power of the lesson. I want my students to feel as though they have the freedom to still feel like a kid and absorb all a book has to offer during a reading lesson or the strategies of a math lesson. By gathering together on the carpet during lessons allows my learners to feel as though they are part of a family. They can easily turn to a partner and share thoughts and ideas, as well as allows me to listen in on conversation to help foster those thoughts, as well as help correct any misconceptions. Having my students close during a lesson will allow me to keep them awake and engaged instead of battling the distractions of a desk.
