I teach in a Title I, low-income school. Most of my students are faced with challenges inside and outside of the classroom. As the year progresses, I am discovering that nearly 85% of my class is scoring in a tier two or three in the area of mathematics (significantly below grade level). My goal is to help my students reach their potential by purchasing more hands on manipulatives in order to help them build their number sense. Manipulatives are important tools to help students of all ages learn and understand math concepts, from counting to multiplication and division. Using manipulatives allows students to see, touch, and talk about math and build number sense. Research shows that many Tier two and Tier three students benefit from having manipualtives readily available to help form better understandings and reinforce prior knowledge. The materials requested for our classroom include a variety of dice for addition/subtraction and multiplication/division, number tiles, number playing cards, number lines (for whole group and individual student use), bingo games, double sided-counters, ten frames, math white boards, and dry erase markers.
