In a 1st grade classroom, the most powerful tools a teacher has is their books. We encourage students to read and grow but unfortunately many books provide a limited view of the world. Males characters are predominantly the thinkers and doers while females are weaker characters or secondary to plot. The books my students need, like Rosie Revere and Iggy Peck, will help my students see that anybody can be a thinker or a doer, regardless of their gender or race. My students need to see these characters in action, breaking stereotypes and doing whatever they put their mind to. Some of these books are fictional stories while others are more biographical to depict strong women who have already succeeded in their fields. Because all of my students are language learners, they also need an easel/paper to be able to make charts of the new vocabulary they learn and put a visual with them. We also use these charts to create graphic organizers about the books we read and remind us of the important things we learned.
