For this project, I am requesting 40 copies of the book Morning Girl by Michael Dorris to use for Reader’s Workshop within a unit of inquiry on how writers express themselves. We will use this text to teach the concept of perspective through the eyes of the Taino Indians. Prior to reading this book, we will be reading the picture book Encounter, which tells the story of the first explorers coming to Hispaniola. This book will deepen their understanding of what the Taino experience was truly like. The shared reading of the text Morning Girl will promote tolerance as students come to understand what the Tainos experienced. They will consider various perspectives in this text, which will encourage them to consider the perspectives of their independent selections and hopefully, the perspectives of others that they encounter in their everyday lives.
