These materials will give my students access to create and build. Many of my students spend their time connected to electronics- IPads, phones, computers and television. I want to challenge them to think, compromise, and cooperate with each other while creating something. Some of my students will do this non-verbally, but the materials will be a vehicle for communication. The various types of manipulatives can be used throughout the classroom-on our light table, on our classroom rug, or with our teacher-made magnetic board (formerly an oil drip pan). Many of these materials will be used during "free choice" time in our daily schedule. All of the materials will be introduced to the children during group time. We will brainstorm ways the materials can be used, talk about how to safely use the materials, and also discuss how to care for the materials so they will be available to use for a long time. I won't be giving too many directions, because I want the children to use their creativity and imagination. The translucent counters and Imagination builders will be used with our light table, a new addition to our classroom. These items will be used for math activities- counting and sorting. They will also be used by the students to build. The Magnetic Create a Path wIll require problem solving and cooperation. The other materials will engage students in STEM activities. The materials will be used in formal and informal lessons, large group, small group, and individual activities, as well as free choice selections. These materials will help to focus on building self- confidence, work on problem solving skills, and work on using communication skills to express ideas, compromise and cooperate.
