Environment shapes experience, and that's no less true in the classroom. When I need to get work done, I like to sit on the couch or find that comfortable spot in my house. The same goes for students. It may be at a table or in a quiet corner where they work their best. It may be on a wiggly chair to help with a wiggly body or it may be standing at a desk or sitting with a tray table. As the years have gone by, I have seen a growing need for flexible seating. Without having the tools for flexible seating, I have witnessed improvement, when I allow for children to find a quiet spot outside of their traditional desk area. The excitement of finding something that works with a child is so rewarding as a teacher. We work so hard to adjust curriculum to a child's needs, but what about changing their environment as well. Being able to switch it up and keep their attention by choice and movement has been a blessing in my classroom. It not only creates engagement, but also community. This is why I am asking for Hokki chairs, balance ball chairs, tray tables and standing desks. Not only can we use the trays on the carpet, but also use different types of seating to accommodate for different types of learning.
