In our third year of piloting Ethnic Studies via a literature course, we need to build a library. We need books that reflect the people who are underrepresented in our high school textbooks. Our students are Mexican, Central American, African American, Native American and South American. Few are represented in our district textbooks. We need a collection of books that reflects our student population. When our students see the diverse group of writers that reflect their own heritage, they see that their stories matter. It is rare to see a movie or novel written about South Central from a person who actually grew up there. When we read books by writers of color, our students may be inspired to tell their own tales.
