After a fulfilling first year of teaching, I learned much about what it means to run a dynamic and efficient classroom. One big takeaway was that in order for students to feel successful academically, the routines and structures of the classroom need to feel smooth and accessible. An organized classroom is a happy classroom. My students deserve the materials and space to move about their learning efficiently. With this goal in mind, I plan to use mailboxes to keep students' materials organized, from their notebooks to their workbooks to their homework folders. Students will have their own space to access their learning materials, as well as the personal responsibility to keep it neat. With a new curriculum this year, I intend to pilot teaching routines using individual whiteboards and interactive notebooks. The new curriculum provides workbooks with guided readings and notes, but I believe my students will benefit from the opportunity to use the free space of whiteboards to try out their ideas before cementing them on an answer sheet. Furthermore, 3 subject notebooks will help students keep our different learning activities organized, depending on the skill being used (reading, creative writing, vocabulary). The remaining materials - copy paper, office chair, and timer - are intended to keep the classroom (and me!) moving efficiently. The copy paper will be used for additional notes and homework assignments. The chair will let me move swiftly around to each student, while still allowing me to stay at eye level with my students. Finally, I plan to use the timer to keep the classroom moving according to schedule, not wasting a precious minute of learning time. The materials listed here will help my students and me hold ourselves accountable to the diverse and dynamic learning that is sure to take place this year!
