Do you remember what school used to be like? We played games, got our hands dirty, and were given creative freedom to simply learn? In my short five years of teaching, I have noticed that my students are most engaged when I step out of the picture. When I let them explore, create, and play independently and with their classmates, their curiosity skyrockets. They learn more than what the state standards require. It opens doors to researching, collaboration, and teaching others around us about what they learn. My goal for this coming school year is to transition my style of teaching from mostly teacher-centered to mostly student-centered. I wish to become simply a facilitator for learning. I'll be monitoring, and available to guide them on their path, but their learning will come mostly from their own exploration and interests. First step: no assigned desks. The students will keep their materials in portable Sterilite containers, to be housed on shelves in our classroom. The students will work around the room using yoga mats, kneeling pads, or in scoop chairs. Next step: provide materials students can create with. The variety of building materials I included on my wish list (Tinkertoys, Building Bricks, Building Blocks, Brain Flakes) will give students the freedom to create different structures, bring stories to life by acting out scenes, or being able to visually manipulate patterns and fractions. Thank you for helping me reach my goal of creating life-long explorers and learners!
