Classroom set up hasn't changed much since the industrial revolution, but our students certainly have. Classrooms today need to be easily changeable allowing for the more diversified learning styles of today's students. The old demand of quiet attention toward a single outcome does not produce the kind of thinker that will be needed for jobs that will rely heavily on the creative use of knowledge in cooperative environments. Today's students need space to have conversations, practice debate tactics, work together in groups, yet still have areas where students can work quietly when needed. In my current classroom the desks have attached chairs which take up enormous amounts of space, are only able to be configured in very limited ways and leave little space to move once filled with junior high bodies and backpacks. The furniture I requested will take the place of many of these current desks, giving the room a more spacious feel. The new furnishings provide places for students to work together, and can be easily moved as needed to accommodate different activities. There is ample research to support the benefit of flexible environments on student learning outcomes. But, just having a classroom where students can't wait to be is success in itself!
