My goal is to build upon this teaching, learning environment and culture I have been cultivating the last few years. My experience with flexible seating started with fourth, fifth and sixth graders, and continues this year with second grade. I have found it beneficial both behaviorally and academically to allow students choice in not only where, but how they sit (or not) to be successfully engaged in their learning. This confirms what others have found to be true: The physical movement and stimulation students gain with flexible seating, helps the brain function and retain learning. Using the requested items, students will sustain greater focus and investment in their learning activities as they experience a greater variety of options for seating in addition to traditional models. They will be part of a classroom culture that pays particular attention to their physical space and well-being; thereby, reinforcing a positive relationship with school and learning. The cafe table and chairs will create another learning station, placed by a large window for natural light. The KORE stools will surround a traditional table and allow for a slight rocking motion. Students will engage their core muscles as they sit in their colorful stacking stools. Kick bands and inflatable cushions can be added to traditional chairs to entertain busy feet and bodies, and the "Big Joe" chair will provide a more laid-back, cozy option. Finally, with any of my "non-surface" spots, a lap desk is a critical necessity. They will have the freedom to wiggle, bounce, lie down, stand, move, lean, perch, or even squat following agreed upon guidelines for fairness and success.
