Students are able to do their best work when they recognize and utilize the seating options in which they work best. By having a variety of flexible seating in our first grade classroom, students will be able to find spaces and tools that work for them. Yoga mats will allow students to sit or lay comfortably throughout the classroom to do reading and independent work. Cushions and kneeling pads will facilitate work at low or kneeling tables. These cushions are also portable, creating comfortable spots for independent reading and whole group instruction. Having a variety of options for seating at tables such as the wobble stools, multi-color stools, or wiggle seats allows for choice during seat work. In addition, students will be able to access a standing table so that they can stand to work independently and collaborate with their classmates. Flexible seating will allow students to have choice and voice in how they are best able to learn in the classroom. In the same way that traditional seating does not work for all students, having only 2-3 options also inhibits student choice. By offering many options for students to sit, kneel, stand, and even lay, all my first graders will be able to find work spaces that help them succeed.
