Flexible seating in classrooms, gives students a choice, in what kind of learning space works best for them. It also helps them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking. Hard plastic chairs, can be uncomfortable, especially for students who are full of energy. My classroom has many students with special needs and IEP's, and the optional seating, allows many of these students to participate in classroom discussions, complete activities, and work independently, without being distracted, from discomfort from a traditional chair. It will also give them the option to sit at their desks, as well as move around the classroom, to stay focused, while completing their work.
