I envision the class rug as a place where my kindergartners can gather together for group instruction. It will also serve as a space where they can work independently, in small groups and in mini-lessons. I've learned from working with young children, that it helps to have a space that is shared and community oriented in order to help create a sense of belonging. This rug will be where stories are told, friends are made and children can be kids again. Shared spaces are important in children's development because they have to learn how to respect space while sitting near each other, listen closely while they take turns to speak and share their experiences. This rug ties together the instructional, interpersonal and physical environment to create a safe and engaging space.
