When students can have an option to use for learning, such as choosing a seat, learning increases and behavior decreases. I have seen and heard about alternative seating but have not tried this option out in my classroom. I want students to do their best learning where they choose, not sitting perfectly still in plastic chairs during each lesson. Learning is my top-most priority in my classroom, and if alternative seating will make a difference for student engagement and academic process, then that is what I will do. When my kindergarteners come to school for the first time in the fall, I hope they see the warmth and comfort that these ball chairs and pillows offer.
