Social-emotional learning is a crucial part of a child's day at school. What better way to discuss culture, relationships, and feelings than through picture books! Picture books at 5th grade, you ask? Well, did you know that many picture books that may look like they are for littles, are actually written at a much higher level? And they are SO versatile. We will use them not only as part of social-emotional learning, but to build a reading culture in our classroom, history & writing & math instruction... the list goes on! Our goal is to read one picture book a day, that's 180 books read together this school year! I've already started a collection of books that I know my students will love and benefit from, but we could use your help. These books have been carefully selected for their rich content, to help create a diverse classroom collection to be shared together each day. These books represent differences, family, identity, kindness, diversity, and dreams. Building a classroom community is the first place to start so that each of my kiddos feel comfortable in his/her own skin- no matter the skin they are in! Picture books are the perfect avenue for discussing difficult topics and emotions, often through light-hearted illustrations and humor! I cannot wait to watch our classroom community grow through this special, shared time of each of our 180 days together.
