I am a Physical Education teacher in the South Bronx. We are trying to create a positive environment in an area that can be tough to thrive in. I decided to start a soccer team with minimal to no funding. Even though it is a lot of management, this gives my kids a productive activity after school along with an added purpose of attending school. Our school has an issue with attendance and we are working to try to get more kids coming to school regularly. We do not even have the basics as far as soccer equipment goes. Our field is all concrete. The balls we have are either too small or are old volleyballs. We do not have any shin guards and our jerseys we wear are all the wrong sizes that we borrowed. We are a coed team and some of the jerseys on my girls go down to their feet. Our games are located in a park in Manhattan. The league we are in is the first year they have done this. Everybody involved is doing the very best they can with little or nothing to work with, all to see our kids have a blast when they get out on the field. We have been fundraising almost every day just to cover the cost of transportation to and from the games. Last week we fundraised the exact amount we needed for one game. We do not have any money in our budget for our team. This team is worth everything to my kids and I am asking for a helping hand. First, we need the requested soccer balls and shin guards.
