All these materials will enhance learning in my classroom. 8 and 9 year-old children should be moving throughout the day. Research supports that the body releases a chemical after 17 minutes of sitting which switches the body into rest mode (sleep mode). Students then begin to "tune out" from instruction, which therefore impedes active learning. With flexible seating, my students will be allowed to move, balance, & strengthen their bodies which will also strengthen their minds. This flexible seating arrangement will accommodate movement in my classroom. My room will be set up with 5 main tables. Each table will have specialized seating where students can rotate on a daily basis in order to receive the full effects of Active Based Learning. The 4 wobble chairs & the 4 stability balls will be located in the middle of room around the student tables. These chairs will be used during independent work time and in stations. My students will be able to move and work at the same time. The 4 Jellyfish Junior chairs will be located at the working with the teacher station. Research shows that balancing using wobble chairs, stability balls and jellyfish chairs aides children with sequencing patterns and problem solving. Students will be encouraged to move as we discuss complex math story problems. Instead of sitting in hard plastic chairs, my students will enjoy balancing their bodies while we work. The Magna-Tiles will be a station during our geometry unit. The tiles will provide hands-on experience by building 3D shapes instead of studying from a piece of paper. The Building Fractions kit will be used during our fraction unit the same way. We will also incorporate purposeful brain breaks every 20 minutes. I encourage you to look at the research on Active Based Learning!
