As the new librarian at Johnson Elementary in Montrose, I toured the library for the first time and imagined what I could do in the 2017-18 school year to promote literacy, engage active minds and generate a passion for books in our future authors and illustrators. My thoughts immediately turned toward utilizing technology to achieve these goals. Scanning the room, I noticed two old desktop computers in an inconspicuous spot that logistically could not possibly be used by 30 students in the allotted 50 minute time slot spent with me. To quote Dr. Seuss, “Oh the places we could go …” with 5 new Chromebooks and accompanying headphones. Kindergartners could listen to famous actors recite stories (just like at bedtime) as well as read online books themselves through apps including Starfall and ABC Mouse. First and second graders would begin to type their earliest writing works and share through Google Classroom with teachers and fellow classmates. Besides looking up available books on the library’s online researcher app, the World Wide Web would be an additional place where third through fifth grade students could hone their online research skills. Classroom assignments would be so much easier to complete as kiddos would have an additional place (the library) to utilize all Google apps. Five Chromebooks would integrate perfectly with my centers based teaching as I rotate students through their learning time with me. The logistics nightmare of old desktops attached to the only internet port in the room would vanish. Students would simply use available apps within our wireless network.
