This project will give my students a mix of 62 fiction and nonfiction books. The International Reading Association recommends 20 (yes, 20!) books per student in a classroom library. Why is that number so high? A wide array of texts of different genres, styles, length, and content allows students to nurture a love of reading, while also developing crucial background knowledge and reading comprehension. Indeed, wide reading is one of the highest predictors of reading comprehension ability. Currently, I only have 6 books per student- a far cry from the 20 books per student recommended by the IRA. I've purchased some books through grants and legislative money, but my students need your help! A better classroom library will help me foster a love of reading in my students, and develop their reading ability- two of the most important things I can do as an educator.
