Students will be participating in literature circles (reading novels together in small groups). By providing multiple copies of engaging novels such as Wonder, The Crossover, and Inside Out and Back Again, that reflect students' cultures and lives, students benefit on many levels. By being fully engaged in a book, students' literacy will grow significantly. It follows the adage, practice makes perfect, or better. Second, students' thinking and communication skills will also develop as they discuss the novels' characters, plot, and theme within their small groups. Finally, students' views of the world grow each time they read a book. Our students have limited enriching experience in the outside world, and reading broadens their understanding of different perspectives and grows their empathy for others.
