In third grade place value is one of the foundational blocks for math. Without the grasp of this concept, anything after becomes even more difficult and challenging for the students to understand. Having limited or no manipulatives makes it hard for my students to be able to fully understand the concept. They need the concrete aspect of the skill in order for us to later turn to the abstract. Each student being able to have their own set of base ten blocks and number cards would make a world of difference for our students. Having bigger models of the base ten blocks to display on the board to guide them through problems will help so many of our visual learners. By donating these sets of place value manipulatives you are giving our students a better chance to succed in such a fundamental, foundational part of math in 3rd grade.
