Over the last 3 years I have slowly been adding flexible seating options to my classroom. We currently have wiggle stools, clip boards, wooden stools, scoop chairs, and exercise balls. As a School for Rigor we spend a lot of time working on tasks in teams. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk. This has encouraged me to ditch the traditional desk and chair mindset. Through trial and errors students have to learn what types of seating will help them to be successful . My school is located in a high poverty area, and 100% of students receive a free lunch and breakfast. Every year I have students in my class with extra behavior needs. Since implementing flexible seating during independent time I have have noticed higher student engagement, increased problem solving skills, and higher test scores. One of the few drawbacks we have found is that the exercise balls never stay put. I have requested two different types of inflatable seats to help make this popular choice less distracting to our learning. The lap desks will allow students to work around the room without having to always drag along a clipboard or hard writing surface. I am hoping that adding these additions to our room will continue to increased student engagement and give more students the option to work away from their desk.
