Math concepts can be very abstract and difficult to grasp, especially for kindergarteners and first graders. For this reason, I would love to allow my students the opportunity to have as many tools to help bolster their learning as possible. Calendar time helps reinforce not only number sense and an understanding of days, months, and years, but it also helps create a sense of community among the students in the class. Students will have the opportunity to take part in whole group discussions and answer questions with their individual white boards. Allowing students to write their answers down on their board can help increase overall participation. Once everyone has written an answer down, they hold up their boards and I, as the teacher, can scan the room to see the how well the class is understanding the material we are going over. Hands-on practice with clocks will help students gain a better understanding of how to tell time. I would also like to incorporate more flexible seating into my classroom with carpet squares and wobble cushions to help students remain more focused during seat work. These materials will help my students grasp concepts that may have once seemed difficult or out of their reach; they will help my students' confidence soar. These materials will help students with problem solving techniques that they will one day be able to apply to subjects outside of the classroom. Lots of hands-on work requires a lot of organization on the part of the teacher, so some of these materials, like the flip chart easel and three-drawer unit, will help me be as organized as possible so I can provide the most meaningful math time to my students. I also hope that these materials will help make learning more fun and engaging for all of my students!
