Teaching students about diversity, inclusion and anti-racism is so vital to their social and emotional development, and to the development of a world that embraces diversity, inclusion and anti-racism. The current social climate of our world is demanding that we do a better job of educating our students about all of these very important social issues. When we know better, we do better. Our students need to be given the opportunity to know the truth behind the difficult realities of racism and inequities. The picture books I have requested highlight many of the struggles and victories that men, women and children in our country and around the world have experienced while dealing with these social issues. Picture books bring the stories alive in ways that are accessible and relatable. These books will allow students to see themselves in the stories, and give us a chance to engage in deep discussions about social injustices. The work of helping to break barriers and empower anti-racism will be messy and at times uncomfortable. Yet this is some of the most important work that we will engage in. When we know better, we do better.
