My students come from diverse economic and social backgrounds, but a large majority come from low income households. As a result some of our children come into school with trauma related histories. We find that these children have a more difficult time managing their moods and lack the coping skills to deal with frustration. It is our duty as educators to teach these coping skills along with academic skills in order to develop creative, cooperative, and functioning citizens of the community. Our school has worked for the past two years in training, to support our students whom have experienced trauma. We have implemented many strategies and we have given our students some tools to self regulate. In the beginning of the year my students will be able to personalize their very own bear. They will make beds for them and give them a name, we may even have special clothes for them! They become a constant and a trusted friend to each individual student. These bears will serve as companions to our many kindergarten adventures, from learning about our school to taking a trip to the apple orchard! These bears will become a trusted friend that my students can express their worries, feelings, and problems through their bears. This gives them a safe and healthy way to express themselves without feeling judged. The bears can be a reading buddy or someone to tell a new story to before they write their next true story! They can even go home with the students and then report back on something exciting they did over the weekend. Essentially these bears will serve as a companion or item of comfort in which the students themselves take ownership of. I am truly excited to use these bears to create a safe environment for my students.
