A classroom with flexible seating looks different from a traditional classroom that uses only desks and chairs. Items such as pillows, stools, yoga balls and standing tables are used to allow students the option of working in an environment where they can learn best. The ultimate goal of flexible-seating is giving students choice and freedom to advocate for their own learning; their best learning spot may change throughout the year, or even through a single period, based on their individual needs and the work they are being asked to do. Additionally, flexible-seating fosters a classroom of productive communication and collaboration which is a necessity when working with middle school age students. I feel that giving the generation of collaboration and communication a chance to work in this way will help them learn to the best of their ability. Research shows it is a great benefit for all learners; this will include my large population of English language learners that tend to learn best when immersed with fluent language speakers. The ability for ELL's to work with teachers, co-teachers and students alike will be further enhanced by the incorporation of flexible-seating in the classroom. All middle school age students will develop important 21st century life skills by learning how to develop responsibility for their own style of learning and by advocating for their choice.
