My students sometimes struggle with our songs because they're primarily in English. Everyone gets to participate equally when we focus on an activity that's non-verbal. Playing instruments and movement fills this need, but a vital part of musical expression is the act of creating. Unlike the past, when you needed to be able to read and write music in order to compose music, today's technology opens up creation to everyone. Because the iPad is so intuitive, even youngsters in Kindergarten with little to no English skills can express themselves musically. These iPads would allow all of my students not only to compose their own music, but to work on skills such as cooperation and collaboration as they share the tablets in small groups.
