My students are learning in a world that demands their attention. Sometimes, it can be difficult to see the ways in which school connects to real life. Library skills are about setting students on their own paths of learning with the academic tools and equipment they will need to become their own best teachers for the rest of their lives. The books and accompanying materials for my project will be the foundation for a makerspace in our library that will give students the opportunity to satisfy their curiosity and begin to see the world's connections through designing and building. For example, they will be motivated to read all about how to think like a scientist, engineer, or artist as they learn to use Legos or K'NEX to build neghborhoods, bridges, or skyscrapers. They will gain confidence and improve nonfiction reading skills as they teach themselves origami or make themselves useful items like a duct tape wallet or purse. As they strive to solve problems, they will have everything they need to investigate and explore 'making' in the information-rich library; learning to use the resources to find answers to their questions as they collaborate with others or work on their own.
