The varied seating I have requested for my classroom will allow my students to feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment. Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work and with whom. It also allows them to change their location and positions as needed so they are more comfortable and willing to learn. An uncomfortable student is definitely an unproductive student! Flexible seating encourages students to learn at their highest potential by modeling the classroom environment after the "real world" environment. It allows students to quickly and easily pair up and work in small groups to show that collaboration can encourage better thinking and higher self-esteem. Children need to move. Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand and it also helps keep young minds more alert and focused.
