5th grade is a hard age for so many students! Why is my body changing? Who am I? How do I fit in? Why are my friends being mean to me? But what if you were facing all of this and had a disability? The book "Wonder" by R. J. Palacio is a phenomenal book about a 5th grade boy born with a facial deformity and how he deals with acceptance, bullying, and overcoming adversity when he goes to a new school. Reading this book together as a class will create opportunities for discussions that will improve the classroom dynamic and environment. The students will use the lessons from the book to relate to situations in their own lives and to "CHOOSE KIND," which is a movement that the book started. Students will use this book as a springboard not only for discussion, but for literary and writing skills practice. Some skills that will be emphasized are sequencing, character analysis, drawing conclusions, and persuasive writing. This will be a semester-long project.
