My students need a set of desk maps. We use maps to establish basic map-reading skills. Our initial unit includes practice reading a map (title, orientation, date, author, legend). We move on as we create maps that are useful to us. This emphasis on location and map-reading continues throughout the year as we studies continents and countries throughout the world. In this global age, students gain a better understanding of world events if they know where those events are happening. As we study other countries and cultures, having a map to refer back to helps students develop knowledge about the physical and political aspects of our world. This makes it easier for them to understand where current events occur and to understand why they might be important to us and our country.
