My students learn about domestic violence in their Health Fundamentals CTE class. This prepares them to work in the medical field with victims of domestic violence and educates them about the process of domestic violence from the beginning of the abuse. This topic is highly emotional and most students know someone who has been a victim of domestic violence. Students will use fabric paint and fabric markers to create t-shirts reflecting their emotions about domestic violence. Each color t-shirt has a different meaning, allowing students to convey a personal message with their project. Students frequently design a shirt with a friend or family member in mind. The hangers and the clothes line will be used to display the t-shirts in the school, creating an school-wide exhibit that promotes tolerance. We also have a day that scheduled for the students to wear the st-shirts to class. This project allows students to deal with the intense emotions that accompany the lesson about abuse while preparing them top become become vital parts of the health care community. This can lead to breaking the cycle of domestic violence in vulnerable communities. With the donation of t-shirts, fabric paint, fabric pens, clothes line and hangers we can transform our students into agents of positive change in their communities.
