Both during and after school, I teach my students grades 4th-8th how to play the ukulele. We perform music covers and at concerts to solidify our skills with the ukulele. Students also participate in ukulele club, where students voluntarily stay after school to further hone their skills. Ukulele is a fantastic instrument for students to play to learn musical concepts and provides students with skills to play other instruments. Currently, we use a class set of soprano ukuleles to accomplish this. Unfortunately, the class set of ukuleles we do have are very old and when shared between a group of 370 students, they go through a lot of wear and tear, even though my students are very careful with the instruments. By getting six new high-quality ukuleles in the different sizes (soprano, 2 concerts, tenor, bass, and ubass) my students will have a higher quality instrument to perform with and have more possibilities to perform music. Each of the new ukuleles are acoustic/electric which means students will be able to amplify their performance through the mini amps included in my request and connectivity accessories. This will allow students to perform in larger spaces, outdoors, and use effects in their playing. Getting appropriate repertoire books will also help students by giving them music to play on both our current ukuleles and the new ones we will be getting. My students are always excited to play the ukulele and practice their skills. With all of these new materials, students will be able to create ukulele bands, a fun and exciting opportunity that represents a modern and unqiue performance-based general music classroom!
