This project will put a Chromebook into the hands of students who find reading challenging. It will offer students an option to access texts at independent levels on websites such as Learning a-z, Epic Books, Readworks, as well as several other sites. Incorporating motivating reading sites that allow students choice will increase students’ motivation to read, as well as improve their comprehension and accuracy, in order to increase overall reading performance towards end of year standards. The use of technology, which provides choice and individualization, motivates students to read and thus enhances and enriches their reading behaviors. Reading, like any other skill, involves ongoing practice in order to improve accuracy, fluency, and comprehension. The Chromebook would be set up as a station for the students to use either during an instructional reading block or a reading intervention block with a Reading Specialist. The websites utilized will also be available for the students to access at home, thereby strengthening the home/school connection and involving parents in their child’s learning. An additional benefit of a Chromebook will allow students choice in demonstrating comprehension. Storyjumper helps students create their own book, retelling the story that they read. Google Docs will allow students to personalize their retell with choice of formats, fonts, and images. Edpuzzle allows the teacher to create a reading assignment geared towards the student’s level and skill based needs. Inserted throughout the reading are comprehension checks and written responses. Having a Chromebook accessible will afford students with unlimited learning opportunities.
