Since my first year of teaching, I have had the same old books that I inherited when I got my first classroom. With each year that passes, I think about replacing/adding to my classroom library, but this task seems financially daunting. Fast forward to the end of this past school year, when I was chatting informally with my students. I asked them what I should keep doing versus what I should maybe tweak or get rid of this coming school year. A student who I had for the last two years told me it would have been nice to have a real classroom library, like the ones his friends have in their classrooms. My heart sank. My students have the motivation and drive to become the best readers they can be - and they're very close to reading on grade level - they just don't have books that peak their interest. I would love to be able to provide my students with reading material that is enriching and that they truly enjoy reading.
