One of the largest barriers for students in continuing their education is the belief that they can't do it. This is especially true in our low-income community. Building a college and career prep atmosphere in the school, can help combat that thought. Having a banner for seniors to sign, will show them that their goals are important, whether that is college, the military, a trade school or heading right in to the workforce. Posting that banner in the front hallway will help us build a college and career-ready atmosphere in our school. Taking pictures of the seniors in a picture frame with "I decided" on the frame and sharing those in a slide show in the lunchroom, will further encourage younger students to work on their own goal-setting. Short-term and long-term goal setting is so important for students so that they see the connection between high school and what they do after high school. Students need help with their transition to college, especially those from low-income families. One of the ways to do that is make sure that they have taken the next steps toward actual enrollment in the fall. I would like the Chromebooks in my office so that I can help them log in to their college account to finalize any financial aid paperwork, sign their housing agreements and sign up for orientation.
