The importance of reading over the summer cannot be over-emphasized. “Summer slide” is the tendency for students, especially those from low-income families, to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year. Although many of my students have started to enjoy reading, they do not have access to books over the summer. Their parents cannot afford to buy them books, and they are unable to get to the public library due to lack of transportation. My project will enable me to loan students high-interest books for them to read over the summer. I will be able to help them select books that are "just right" for them, because I have worked with them all year to establish their appropriate reading level and identify their reading interests. Since these are fourth graders who will return to our school for fifth grade in the fall, it is my hope that many of the books will be returned to me in September. However, in my opinion, it is better to put a book in the hands of a reader and not get it back than to never give a book for fear of not seeing it again! A new book is a treat for students who have not had many opportunities to own one, and that alone creates high interest in reading! Thank you for considering a donation to my project!
