My students must learn to use their brains and playing a game like checkers teaches them to be strategic in order to win. Learning to play by the rules, following directions, being patient, waiting your turn are examples of social skills developed when children engage in games like dominoes and scrabble. Students are required to focus and stay in their seat this will create longer attention spans. The Rubik's cube is an excellent way for those students who prefer to work alone to find success. My vision is seeing new friendships develop among by Spanish-speaking students and the English speaking students because they played checkers in the library.
