My 6th-8th grade Special Education/Reading Intervention classroom is situated in Northwest Washington, DC at a Title I school where 100% of my students qualify for free-and-reduced lunch and 100% are students of color. My students come from historically underserved neighborhoods within our nation's capital, and by the time they reach middle school, they are often several grade levels behind students from wealthier areas. However, my students are inquisitive and excited to learn and to harness their potential, I am willing to make every sacrifice necessary to be a champion for the achievement of my students. This year, they have participated in and initiated conversations about social justice and equity in everything from our discussion of growing up and maturity to Malala to Native American mascots. I hope to support them more abundantly this school year. Will you help us?
