As a teacher I am constantly educating myself on the best researched based education I can give my students. I attend professional development, join teams, collaborate with others and purchase new materials. So, why wouldn't I do what is best practice for my classroom environment and not just academics!? Research shows "simple in-class activities can boost performance. Studies suggest that children who participate in short bouts of physical activity within the classroom have more on-task behavior, with the best improvement seen in students who are least on-task initially." Having flexible seating will keep their bodies moving and promote on-task behavior at the same time. I mentioned that my class is unique, so I plan to meet their individual needs by offering a standing table, floor table with pillows and a rug, stools and chairs with stability balls. We do many group projects, stations, and lessons. We also often check in with our neighbors to check for understanding. I use Responsive Classroom with my class which is an evidence-based approach to elementary teaching that focuses on the strong link between academic success and social-emotional learning. Using round tables and sharing materials will help my class successfully follow this model.
