There is power in movement through learning. Flexible seating provides an optional seating arrangement that allows for increased focus and stamina. Students benefit from flexible seating and movement in ways such as increased core strength and posture, improved participation and behavior due to increased focus, and higher academic achievement. This year I gave my students the option of flexible seating. My students love it and beg for it. I do not have enough options for all of my students and there are some students that need these tools everyday, so rotating them is not an option. One day, I gave a student who was struggling staying focused while completing table work a wobble stool and within 5 minutes this student had completed the work needed. It was almost an immediate difference. I have noticed that my students are able to get out the movement they need while performing the task at hand, whether on the carpet or at their tables. I want my students that want to learn from the floor table to have a cushion that is comfortable enough for their itty bitty bottoms. If they are fidgeters and frequent movers, I want them to be able to have access to and teach them how to choose the appropriate tool to help them as they learn more and not be categorized as a behavior problem. I am a firm believer that providing students with the appropriate tools to help them with their learning needs and styles is necessary.
