Within our literacy curriculum, teachers are using daily read aloud experiences and discussions to grow students' reading strategies and comprehension skills. Students are engaging in close reading experiences, dissecting text details and exploring universal themes. They have learned to share their ideas, build off one another's thoughts and respectfully disagree. The intention of this project proposal is to bridge this work to help our students develop social and emotional competencies. We are hoping to provide each classroom within our school with a text set around kindness to support students' understanding of how their actions and words can profoundly affect others. Education today needs to encompass more than just academics. Matters of the heart must be taken seriously and nurtured as a priority.​ Social and emotional learning provides a foundation for safe and positive learning, and enhances students' ability to succeed in school, careers, and life. When students learn how to change their thoughts and actions by learning about kindness and compassion, it fosters the positive behavior that's expected and naturally rewarded with friendship. Teaching into kindness and respect is key in reducing bullying and creating warm and inclusive school environments. Research has shown that children with a positive outlook have stronger attention spans, are more motivated to learn, and show greater creative thinking.
