If my project is funded, the iPad will be used as learning tools for the students in ways that regular computers do not allow. Traditional computers require students to look between a mouse, keyboard and a screen. With this iPad, students are able to directly touch the screen and interact with text and pictures. They can watch as their fingers directly write and make selections, which can help develop better fine motor skills. For students lacking motor skills, touch screens are more intuitive devices. An iPad can also be used as speech devices. There are wonderful speech programs available for iPads, which will allow expressive language practice for students who are non-verbal or have limited expressive language. For non-verbal students, the iPad can be their voice. They can set up the iPad to say what they want to communicate, giving them the opportunity to share information with their friends and teachers. Funding this grant will allow my students all of the benefits of the iPad and available apps, including academic, fine motor and speech activities.
