Morning work is necessary in the manner that it engages students in some form of learning from the moment they enter my room. However, my desire is to provide meaningful work that isn't busy work, and that offers choice in activity options. Typical morning work is often a quick worksheet that students complete at varying times which means some students finish well before it's time to check their work while some students are struggling just to answer the first question. Making the shift to morning tubs that include activites such as IQ Twist, Think Fun Math Dice, Tangoes, Blokus, Math Fluxx Cards, and more will not only deepen critical thinking skills but will also cater to the varying needs/ability levels of my students.
