Each Tuesday seventeen third, fourth and fifth grade students come together to learn about the value of meditation and yoga. I have seen the benefits of a yoga practice in my own life, but when I asked my students why they wanted to learn more about yoga, I was astounded to hear their replies. One student said, "I signed up for this club so I don't have to go home to my step dad." Another student said they were hoping it would ease their constant headaches. Yet another said she thought it might help her manage her anger. Although this club was not meant to target at-risk students, I discovered that more than half of my students are from low-income families. They represent four different ethnic groups and are drawn to my club to achieve one common goal... coping with their young, stressful lives.
