We are a newly established school, starting off last year virtually with around 260 students. This year we have swelled to twice that amount in person, so we are all getting to know each other once again. Quarterly, students in grades 4-6 can select a ‘Special Special’ (an elective) of their choosing. This is an innovative way to meet individual needs of our gifted students and support their interests. As WGA’s Visual Arts teacher, I have created a photography special called “A Picture is Worth A Thousand Words” for grades 4,5, and 6. Students are taught about the development of the camera, how a camera works, basic elements of photography, design, form and function. They are given weekly challenges to develop photography skills. Afterwards, they are required to upload, edit and create ‘portfolios’ of their photographs. Often, they collaborate with one another and share pictures and ideas. Our pilot program is a success, but with borrowed cameras and equipment from another school. I am requesting funding to provide students with Cannon Cameras, Card Readers, RAM cards and portable tri-pods to be used year after year. With funding from Donors’ Choose, we would be able to supply cameras for those students who cannot bring one from home. Currently, we have up to 3 students sharing one camera each class period. They are super about it, but I would like them to have the autonomy that comes from working solo for some of their experiences.
