My school is a Title I school in Charlotte, North Carolina. We have limited resources and funds to provide materials to meet the individual needs of our diverse learning community. As a kindergarten teacher, most of my students have not experienced a structured school environment before entering my class. Due to not having that experience, I have observed the need to incorporate a more sensory integrated experience. My goal is that all my students meet their full academic potential. Offering my students flexible seating like wobble chairs, rockers, a trampoline, beanbags and a Sit-N-Gym) allows them to incorporate full body movement in all academic areas throughout the school day. Studies have shown that incorporating sensory activities throughout the school day increases students attention and focus and decreases impulsive behavior. This will allow them to retain more of their curriculum and better prepare them for their next step in their academic journey.
