Many researchers have suggested the importance of the achievement gap in education. We often look at the affects of the achievement gap in terms of race or socioeconomic status. However, the achievement gap is far reaching, and can affect students in a variety of ways. One area that researchers are beginning to focus on is access to educational experiences outside of the classroom. I want my students to be able to experience history outside of just textbooks and the possibilities of the classroom. As many students do not have opportunities to visit museums or see the world, it can be difficult for them to connect with history and culture. It is my goal that through the addition of Google cardboard goggles that students may have the opportunity to virtually see the world. I believe that this will afford students to connect with the past on a personal level. This connection will enhance student learning and motivate students to see the importance of history and culture in today's global society. There are many ways to help close the achievement gap, but getting students excited about coming to class and wondering what they will see today is a great start.
