Astronomy is a big part of my curriculum and now with the centerline of the 2017 solar eclipse just passing through our school's front field, my students are more eager than ever to learn all they can about our earth, sun and solar system. Many students are saying they want to become astronomers or even work for NASA. If students were able to explore the planets and other celestial bodies with the use of a telescope and other astronomy equipment, their curiosities and interests will turn into knowledge and skills that will last them a lifetime. By donating to our project, you will not only help students learn more about our earth and universe, but you may ultimately help a student lead to a pathway of becoming a future astronomer. Standard 6E of the 6th grade science curriculum states that students must understand the earth/moon/sun system, and the properties, structures, and predictable motions of celestial bodies in the Universe. The telescope and sunspotter will allow students to actually see specific features of the sun, moon and planets. We will also plan several "Night Sky" viewing parties for students and the community to do night viewings. The skyscope planetarium will transform my classroom into a night sky to further explore our solar system, planets, constellations and the deep sky beyond. With the orbit model, students will easily see how the earth tilts on its axis and causes the seasons on earth. The catchball will provide a fun and interactive way to review for our Earth and the Universe unit. With your help, students will be able to explore the solar system well beyond the limitations of a classroom and allow students to see features that they once were only limited to from pitures. With your help, the sky's the limit!
